Abolish Rent: Chicago Discussion Group
CHICAGO: Interested in a discussion with around tenant organizing and the fight for housing? Join us at Haymarket House for a three part in-person conversation around Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis' new book, Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End the Housing Crisis Wednesday evenings in October and November.
Abolish Rent takes aim at one of the foremost engines of inequality and injustice. Rent drives millions into debt, despair, and onto the streets. The social cost of rent is too damn high. Written for anyone fed up with the permanent housing crisis, complicit politicians, and real estate greed, Abolish Rent dissects our housing system from the perspective of those it immiserates. Through brisk, unequivocating analysis and striking stories of resistance, it shows us how tenants can, through organizing and collective action, finally rebalance the scales.
We will share some discussion questions for each session ahead of time but this is a space where participants will guide the conversation and are asked to actively read with us and bring ideas to the group. While it is not required that folks attend all sessions we hope that you can join us for the whole series as we build a community of tenants around this invaluable text. Here are the details for each session:
Wednesday October 9th: Introduction-Chapter 1
Wednesday October 23rd: Chapters 2-3
Wednesday November 13th: Chapters 4-5
We ask that all participants are masked during the discussion and we will provide light refreshments afterwards.
